Why Japan?
Our journey stars in the jungles of Bali where Noah and I met. We joined Green School in grade eleven and our shared love for entrepreneurship and wild business ideas immediately brought us together. After a few months of bouncing plans back and forth we hadn’t come to much consensus on how we were going to make a billion dollars. The one idea that we kept circling back to though, was that after we graduated we wanted to spend a ski season in Japan together. Initially it felt like a lot of the fantasy plans you make with friends at that age but month after month Noah would bring it up and each time I’d get a little more invested..
Covid put a bit of a wrench in our plans and I ended up graduating six months late, by which time Noah had started an NFT based investment fund; as you do at seventeen. Meanwhile, I was gallivanting around Canada lying to myself that I’d be happy as a minimum wage dog walker, a job I still dream of. As we planned our lives the Japan dream felt like it was slipping away.
I returned to Bali for what was meant to be a brief trip before I embarked on my exciting life of 9-5 work in Canada. While back home I reconnected with Noah and to my surprise and delight he was still set on Japan. Since our initial conversations I had never let myself truly believe it was going to happen, as I didn’t want the disappointment to hurt too much. Now it was suddenly on me. My parents loved the idea and Noah was looking at flights. I was the only one who wasn’t sure about the whole thing. For the first time I was an adult and had to make a choice that would seemingly change everything. If things went wrong this time there was no one to blame but myself. Thankfully I pulled up my big boy pants and the rest, well, you’re about to hear about it.
